Flexible Beach Boarwalk Provides All Ability Access at Littlehampton

Flexible and Portable Access Solutions from Impact Leisure

Impact Leisure designed and created an innovative flexible beach boardwalk at West Beach, Littlehampton for Arun District Council as part of their refurbishment programme of the area. West Beach is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the flexible boardwalk was designed to provide All Ability Access whilst minimizing the impact on the environment.

Impact Leisure manufactured a flexible beach boardwalk 66 metres long by 1.5 metres wide with a terminal turning area. Oak timber slats with anti slip applied, divided by spacer tubes were threaded onto stainless steel cable to provide a structure that is sturdy yet flexible. The weight of the boardwalk keeps it in place but spikes could be driven between the slats to prevent too much movement.

The boardwalk provides an effective access solution for people of all mobility, including wheelchair users.

Whilst this design is flexible and allows for some movement, it would be possible to create a more portable boardwalk solution. Using the same technique, the slats and spacers could be threaded to make smaller, more manageable sections of between 1 and 2 metres in length which could be attached together to provide any length of boardwalk required.
