New tracks into the Flinthsire dunes!

Wednesday 24th June saw the official opening o MK Enterprises's latest timber engineering project at Talacre sand dunes.

Flintshire County Borough Council commissioned MK Enterprises to design and construct some 136m long x 3m wide boardwalk over a wetland area at Talacre which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The project consisted of a total length of over 2 kilometres and included cycle and walking paths with the timber boardwalk extending through the SSSI and wetlands areas. It is an extremely sensitive area and the only location in North Wales where the rare Natterjack Toads can be found.  MK Enterprises staff, along with an Ecologist, inspected the site daily prior to work commencing to ensure that the toads were not present within the working area.

The boardwalk provides access to people of all abilities across an area of wetland which will minimise damage to the dunes. Deck boards (some 900 in all) were secured with galvanised fittings and an anti-slip surface applied in advance at our Unit in Llanrwst. All posts were oak to ensure maximum longevity.
